Chaves modern city
Modern history
................................

From San Neutel the republicans resisted the monarchist movement led by Paiva Couceiro. The heroes of Chaves defended the republic of all their forces and thus put an end to the monarchist adventure of the North. Since then, Chaves became a bastion of the new politics and democratic and republican ideals.
Politically Chaves has been divided between Socialists (PS) and Social Democrats (PSD). Communists (PCP) and Christian Democrats (CDU-PP) have had little recent expression.

The Socialists dominated the government in the late Nineties but the recent government is PSD. One feels that people vote more for the person and less for the party. The leftist Bloco de Esquerda has gained recent support, especially among the young, and more educated.

Nowadays, Chaves is rooted in its past but resolutely turned towards the future. By the end of the twentieth century, a new city started to grow, solid, elegant, and proud of its glorious last. Liceu, built on the old convent of the Sociedade Flaviense, is part of a city which discovered and which cherishes its cultural roots, and often fights against the established powers.

Culture
...............

The theatre of the street Correio Velho received large troops of opera, the Spanish zarzuela, and plays by the largest companies of the beginning of the 20th century, time of its greater glory.

The park
................

The park is also a proof of these glorious years, when the parallel market flowered, transforming the area into a paradise for smugglers.
It is occupied today by a lake where one can canoe, lunch or listen to music.
