which still is the principal point of the historical center. |

The first Portuguese kings were conscious of the fact that Chaves was a broad door through which to enter or leave Europe. Located close to the border, Chaves was an important military site from the Middle Ages to last century. Its most important period was immediately after 1640, following the war of restoration. |

Fortresses ................... Built at that time, one finds the Fort of Sao Francisco, now a luxury hotel, and the Fort of Sao Neutel, currently the site of the museum of the area of Chaves. |
