Chaves is the centre of the area of Alto Tâmega and one of the most visited tourist destinations of Portugal. It is a very old county which had an enormous importance in the Iberian peninsula during the Roman occupation. The obviousness of its greatness is still visible in certain vestiges of its glorious past.
 

 

El padrão dos Povos

The Padrão dos Povos above the splendid Roman bridge dates from year 79. It is proven that this imposing construction was built by the people of Aquae Flaviae (the name given by the Romans to this city), at their own expenses, which proves the economic importance of Chaves at that time.

The museum

Chaves is a genuine historical window. To testify for this cultural reality,the museum of area of Chaves has been created; it shelters a great number of pieces of handicraft of the period of the Roman occupation, which go from the domestic ustensils to the temples dedicated to Jupiter, as well as other pieces former to Roman colonization.

The roman bridge

The Roman bridge, a work of a great magnificence for the time, remains one of the most important monuments which confirms the Roman presence in the Iberian peninsula. It had in the beginning 18 arches, of which 12 are still visible.
