Chaves is one of the six municipalities (called "concelho" in Portuguese) of the area of Alto Tâmega located in the district of Vila Real. It is located at 64 kms from the capital of the district, Vila-Real, and 8 kms from the border with Spain.
The municipality of Chaves covers a surface of 600 km2, made up of 50 communes and where 41000 inhabitants reside. The density of the population is there of 68,12 inhabitants per km2.

- Chaves is one of the most important thermal spas of Europe. Its water, which spouts out at 73 °C, was explored by the Romans 2000 years ago, and the city developed around its sources.
The Romans chose to settle in Chaves and to develop the city, at the point to name it according to the powerful emperor Flavius Vespasien.

The springs of Chaves are a wonder of nature. Their water did not cease flowing since 2000 years, always hot, always source of health.

In Portugal, they are the only ones containing soda-bicarbonated hyperthermal water. They constitute a priceless resource which makes Chaves a very important place in the international tourist tours.
